Bringing Indoors Out

Well into summer at this point, we’ve all been to barbeques, swimming and gardening — which are all outside, outside, outside. And although I love spending all the time I can outside during the summer (especially considering it’s Michigan), I start to miss some of the comforts of being inside. One thing I especially miss is kicking back and watching a movie, but why would I waste a beautiful evening in the cool summer air to stay inside? So here’s a solution — create your own DIY movie theater in the comfort of your backyard to get the best of both worlds! I recently found an antique, pull down projection screen at an estate sale for a steal! Other surfaces you can project on may be a hung sheet or drop cloth, pulled tight on all four corners. Or even a white garage door or fence. We connected a laptop to a projector and ta-da — the perfect movie setup. Now all you’ll need are some chairs, blankets and yummy, movie-watching snacks. Sizzled Oranges and Cream with a Blueberry-Balsamic Drizzle Blueberry-Balsamic Reduction: ½ cup blueberries, 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar, 1 tablespoon brown sugar and a 1 teaspoon canola oil. Combine in sauce pan and heat until the blueberries pop, this will thicken it. Drizzle over top of grilled oranges with a scoop of frozen whipped cream. Grilled Bananas with Chocolate, Coconut and Ice Cream Slice bananas at an angle and grill until slightly crisp. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and sprinkle with chocolate chips and shredded coconut. I like to stick the chocolate into the banana right before I take them off the grill — warm, gooey goodness. Strawberry, Mint and Mallow Kabobs Line up fresh strawberries, mint leaves, and marshmallows on skewers and turn the kabob over indirect heat until marshmallows are a slightly golden color.
