The moment when the “ding” sound rings through the plane’s cabin and the pilot announces that, “we have now reached 10,000 feet,” is when I feel closest to my father. There, when I’m as close to heaven as possible, I look at the sky and take some time to remember him.
My father, Tom Pollock, passed away when I was 40 years old. He was a fun-loving, genuine man with a strong-willed personality and an even stronger business sense. My dad loved to travel and his influence is the reason why I work in the travel industry.
My dad was always thinking ahead, using travel to teach me life’s lessons.
On our way home from one trip we had a layover in Chicago. I remember my dad informing me he had no more money. I sweated my way through O’Hare, panicking that we couldn’t spend a dime if we wanted to make it home. A few hours later, as my stomach growled for food, Dad pulled a crisp $100 bill out of his wallet. He asked me what I wanted to eat. Always have extra money on you, he said. To this day I carry extra cash, just in case.
I learned to be independent and fend for myself when I traveled to D.C. alone at 17. I’d passed up the chance to travel with my parents initially — I couldn’t miss my high school prom, right? — but Dad gave me another chance. Always up for a challenge, I planned my first of many trips.
I owe a lot to my dad. It’s in the spirit of adventure and good memories, that I’m excited to announce the Father’s Day Fly Away Contest, presented by Capital Region International Airport and Capital Area Women’s LifeStyle Magazine.
Tell us — in 150 words or less — why your dad deserves to win the Father’s Day Fly Away Contest. The winner will receive a $1,000 travel voucher and an opportunity to make memorable moments.
Entries may be submitted online at before June 7.
