Even though the holidays seem to come faster and faster every year and I’m officially against the holiday creep that goes on at the stores, I’ve started to get that same ole lovin’ feeling. I can’t help it. I was beginning to think that I was outgrowing my urge to over accessorize my home during the holidays when I didn’t cover the interior of my house with spider webs and pumpkins. However, I am longingly looking at new holiday décor items in Martha Stewart Living. Seriously? It’s fine. I haven’t started putting the decorations up yet, so I haven’t lost all my senses.
It’s about tradition, right? Although I’m a huge fan of the comfort that repetitive behaviors provide — especially around the holidays — traditions have to start somewhere. I can’t remember the first time my mom and I went out together for Black Friday shopping or made tin after tin of Christmas candy, but over the years it’s part of the fabric of who I am. This year I’m very excited to start a new tradition at CAWLM. This month we are putting out our first Holiday Gift Guide. It’s so much fun to see this come to fruition. We have been thinking about this for a long time. I hope you enjoy it.
The magazine is also celebrating a milestone. We have officially put out five full years of magazines this month. It has been an exciting journey and I’ve really enjoyed working with the greatest team to put together a magazine that I can honestly say I’m proud of. We work hard to bring mid-Michigan good news that inspires, educates and motivates. We feel like we’re able to feature people and activities that many people are not aware of. It’s about our community and the amazing people in it.
I know you’ll love reading about Tama Hamilton-Wray. She and I actually have a lot in common. We both love people, traveling and telling stories that have not been told yet. I started this magazine with that mission and she began her production company with the same goal. Although making movies might seem extremely difficult, Hamilton-Wray and her husband have a passion for it, which makes it feel like a lot less work. I’ve recently been bitten by the video production bug as well. My company M3 Group has been producing company videos, commercials and video blogs that really help to tell a story. It has been a great way to round out our integrated services. And, it’s been a lot of fun.
There’s so much to be excited about for 2013. Shelley Davis Mielock and I are putting the final touches on the amazing line-up of speakers for the second annual Horizon Conference for women set for Wednesday, Feb. 6. This day is meant to give women educational information that will help them grow in various areas like starting or growing a business, moving up in a career, re-entering or entering the workforce. Every woman should be able to walk away with a golden nugget.
Of course, 2013 wouldn’t be the same without our annual CAWLM 80s Flashback Fundraiser set for Saturday, March 23 at the beautiful University Club. As we get a little closer to this event, we will be asking you to nominate a woman for the Caring About Women Locally or CAWL award dedicated to a woman out there who gives back to women in our community. Another group always giving back are the women in The Links, Inc. They are accepting nominations for the ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award and the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership award. Winners will be celebrated at the 2013 White Rose Gala in early March. For more information contact Shauna Dunnings at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Since this is the official month of giving thanks, I would like to say how thankful I am for such an amazing community to do business, wonderful people who make it fun and rewarding to come to work each day, and my steady-as-a-rock family members who have to put up with me and all my shenanigans. I also want to thank all those people out there behind the scenes making things happen for those in need. I’m always inspired and thankful that so many people give freely of their time, talents and treasures to support organizations of all kinds.
Don’t forget to attend Silver Bells on Friday, Nov. 16 and to make the most of your holiday season. I just may see you out there on Black Friday doing what I can to support the local economy.
