Faithfully Serving Her Community

Jodi Harkema Director of Christian Services You could say that Jodi Harkema is a natural born giver. The director of Christian Services in Lansing was handed the torch for the business that her stepmother started 30 years ago. When founder, Mary Anne stepped down, Harkema, as well as her co-director Liz Yungquest, took over. “It took two of us to replace Mary Anne,” Harkema said. The mother of two is strong in her faith and is dedicated to following the path that God has laid out for her. She has lived this faith-filled life ever since she started working for Christian Services about 20 years ago. The organization, which opened its doors in 1981, began with the sole purpose of helping churches better carry out their ministry and fulfill God’s mission by meeting the community’s needs. Christian Services serves as a liaison between the churches and those with requests. A large network of churches partner with them to fulfill these needs. Although Jodi is able to do what she is passionate about, every day her job is no easy feat. As a director, her job is to discern who truly needs help. She not only listens to what people tell her they need, she also tries to figure out if there is an underlying problem. She discusses things like finance, budgeting and job search strategies with her clients. Playing such a fundamental part in the lives of others, one would expect to receive some sort of recognition. Jodi and her staff remain humble and choose to go unnoticed by most while they promote the churches. She feels that they are “ordinary people doing extraordinary things for God.”
