A love of school and kids has lead to 37 years of successful teaching for Kathy Yuhasz. Yuhasz says she has known since first grade that she was meant to be a teacher. “I grew up with seven brothers and sisters, I was just one of the crowd,” she said. “But at school I was a star. I loved school and I was good at it. I would stay late just to clean the erasers, I just wanted to be there as long as possible.” When Yuhasz talks about her fourth grade students at Horizon Elementary School her eyes light up. She refers to her class as a team and she is the leader, but she is also a part of the team. “If you aren’t involved with them, they won’t be involved with you,” she said. “I like to let them know that this is their family away from home, and when they are here I will take care of them.” The best part of being a teacher for Yuhasz is constantly learning new things. Yuhasz said the kids are always showing her new ways to think about things. “I love that my job allows me to work with kids,” she said. “A mediocre day with my kids is better than a good day working with adults.”
