Local Women: Lisa Kost

Change is Good This past September, Lisa Kost took a risk and switched her career path from marketing and sales to commercial real estate. With more than 25 years of sales, management and marketing experience behind her, Kost had the perfect background to transition into commercial real estate. “My friends started laughing when I told them I was going into commercial real estate during a down market,” Kost said. “But they know I’ve always worked in challenging positions and the skill set I have acquired over the years is well suited for real estate servicing. I’m not afraid to take a risk in my career.” Kost is no stranger to the word new. She grew up in Germany as an army “brat” and moved 13 times and lived in three different states and two countries, before settling down in Okemos. “Every new experience I’ve had, whether it be good or bad, I’ve taken something valuable from it. I’ve learned more from my failures than my success and if I hadn’t taken risks I wouldn’t be where I am today. If you never try, you’ll never know. I don’t want to look back and have all of the ‘woulda’, ‘shoulda’, ‘couldas’. I want to look back and feel that I experienced all life had to offer.” Kost’s husband has been in residential real estate for 30 years and has found success, so when she had the opportunity to interview with CBRE she took a leap and began a new career. “I love that it’s different from what I had done in the past but adapting my skills and working with a different product,” said Kost. “I love that it keeps me connected to what is happening in the economy and understanding the market.” Kost hopes to stay in the commercial real estate business. “It’s a really good time to be in the field despite what the newspapers say because so many new smaller markets are emerging,” Kost said. “I have the opportunity to work with a variety of business owners and many women. They are the fastest growing sector of small business growth according to the Lansing Chamber of Commerce and CBRE is the perfect place to help these young entrepreneurs.” “I really encourage women to share their knowledge with and support younger women in their fields,” says Kost. “The people I work with are dedicated and have a lot of experience. They are very open to teaching me new things and I appreciate that about them.” She has the same mindset and is generous in sharing her knowledge with the people she interacts with and hopes that women can make progress in supporting other women. “Every day is a new day and you can always start a new and try something different. You might have screwed up yesterday or today, but tomorrow is a new day. I love that about January — it’s a season of rebirth,” said Kost. “It’s always good to shake up your brain and learn a new skill. Get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Make decisions based on what you want to do and take risks. This has always worked for me and I’ve had many successes in my career.”
