Local Women: Lori Schaibly

With the help of her supportive family and a strong passion for teaching, Lori Schaibly has turned her vision for an innovative, personalized tutoring program into a successful reality. Her Haslett–based business currently serves students in Eaton, Ingham, Livingston, Shiawassee and Washtenaw counties, with plans for continued expansion. Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH RISE AND SHINE TUTORING? A: After retiring from Fowlerville Community Schools in 2006, I continued to teach part–time and realized a huge need for tutors. As a special education teacher, I empathized with children who were struggling in school, and I wanted to extend the one–on–one attention that special-needs children receive to other students. This all began as a vision, and the transition from educator to business owner was a whole new experience for me. I started marketing at schools in the Lansing area, meeting with administrators and counselors and established Rise and Shine Tutoring in January 2008. Q: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR TUTORING BUSINESS? A: We specialize in individualized attention. Unlike a learning center, where tutors typically are assigned several students and work from a predetermined lesson plan, we pay careful attention to each student’s specific academic needs. I personally visit each home to meet with the family and match the student with the best possible tutor, all of whom are certified teachers, college graduates or degree-seeking college students who teach in their areas of expertise. We’re also unique in that all tutoring is done in the home, which makes for a more convenient and personal experience for the student. Q: HOW DOES RISE AND SHINE TUTORING BENEFIT THE LANSING COMMUNITY? A: A lot of local students are struggling as a result of the new graduation requirements and more demanding curriculums, so it’s important that we help them understand specific concepts and raise their confidence. We give students the opportunity to find tutors that will help them succeed academically, as well as boost their self-esteem and improve their overall attitude toward school and future goals. Many students have formed strong relationships with their tutors, so it’s very rewarding for both sides. We’ve made some really awesome matches.
