Local Women: Shelley Slee, The Crafty Caterer

Occupation: Owner of Charlar Place Events & Catering Residence: Holt Family: Husband, Gary; daughter, Ashley; dog, Lilly Hobbies: Boating, crafting, golfing, skating As owner of Charlar Place Events & Catering, secretary of the Holt Dimondale School Business Alliance and director of the Holt Kiwanis Club, Shelley Slee knows all there is to know about event planning. Her Holt–based business is committed to helping people celebrate and coordinates both local and out–of–state events. Q: What drew you to the event planning business? I learned the techniques of business coordinating, which is similar to event planning, through the skill trade courses I took at Davenport College. I’ve always loved crafting and wanted to incorporate that into my career, so eventually I opened a home furnishings and decorations store in Holt called Divine Creations, where I specialized in floral arrangements. During this time I had 80 local artisans working for me and was constantly attending shows and expos in search of more. This inspired me to create the Holt Hometown Festival, which is now an annual community celebration that brings together local businesses, artists and families. The previous owner of Charlar Place hired me to coordinate the very first event in 1999 and I bought the business shortly after in 2000. I now run Divine Creations through Charlar Place, so I’m able to combine my passions for crafting, decorating and event planning. How does Charlar Place benefit the Lansing community? We’re a one–stop–shop source for people looking to plan lavish events without putting in all the legwork. Our professionals can take care of everything from the food, bar, entertainment and decorations to the invitations and hair and make–up. We also donate our facility and services for fundraising and charity events quite often. I’m a long-time resident of Holt and am always open to hosting networking events or anything that will better the community. What do you love most about your job? The fact that we get to help people celebrate. I love working with people who are celebrating life and sharing in their memories.
