When Darlene Blinn of Lansing was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time, friends and family wanted to help — as they usually do. Some offered to run errands or cook meals — all extremely nice, except for the fact that it meant that Blinn’s home was going to be visited often. With chemo zapping her energy, keeping a clean home for all of her thoughtful guests was going to be no easy task. “When you undergo chemo, your family and friends reach out,” said Blinn, “You want to see your friends, you just don’t want them walking into a messy house.” Soon after her diagnosis, Blinn’s friend in Arizona told her about a wonderful program called Cleaning For A Reason. Blinn did a bit of research and discovered that the non-profit, nation-wide program, started in 2006, was available in her area through a partnership with Housekeeping Associates, located in East Lansing. “It was awesome,” said Blinn. “I didn’t realize there was something like this out there.” After a brief application process last summer, Blinn was paired up with a team from Housekeeping Associates who kept her home clean — coming once a month — until she had finished her treatment. “It takes the burden off,” said Blinn. “It’s one less thing you have to think about.” To date, the Housekeeping Associates offices (there are also locations in Ann Arbor and Brighton) have provided cleaning services for 32 Cleaning For A Reason clients. Overall, Cleaning For A Reason has helped more than 9,000 women for a total value of nearly $2 million dollars with more than 1,040 cleaning partners in all 50 states and Canada. The East Lansing branch typically has two Cleaning For A Reason clients at a time. “We’re a family-owned company,” said Ryan Morgan, East Lansing branch manager. “We try to give back to the community as much as possible.” Kaitlin Cameron and Saundra Berryhill were the two women cleaning for Blinn. “It feels really good,” said Cameron, of her service. Berryhill agrees. “It’s just nice to be able to help people.” “It’s a service we take pride in,” added Morgan.
