The second annual Dapper Dads Challenge is back this year with more local men competing for the title. The fundraiser, which benefits the Sparrow Foundation’s Women Working Wonders committee, features a fashion show of 39 of the area’s most prominent men on Thursday, June 9 at Kositchek’s, 113 N. Washington, Lansing. A wine and cheese reception starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the fashion show at 6:30 p.m. The event will have the Doo Wops as musical guests and will be emceed by MSU women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant. More than 300 people attended the fashion show last year, and the men worked the runway. “The gentlemen had such a great time hamming it up,” said Karen Grannemann, chair of the Dapper Dads committee. This year, 39 local men (see the list online at www.sparrow.org/dapperdads) will be competing to be named the most dapper, including professionals, attorneys, doctors, bankers, CPAs, business owners and employees at local companies. “I think the biggest part of this whole event is just who those men are, because they are what makes it successful,” Grannemann said. Voting for the dads has already opened, and anybody can vote for their favorite by making a $5 donation online or over the phone. “We are looking forward to a really competitive, high-spirited contest,” Grannemann said. “Like I said to the gentlemen, may the best man win.” People can also vote for the men at the event, and the winner will be announced that night. Last year the event raised $42,000 for Women Working Wonders (W3), a volunteer committee under the Sparrow Foundation that supports women’s health in mid-Michigan and has raised more than $700,000 since its inception in 2002. Organizers hope to double that amount at this year’s event. Prizes for the models are gift cards to Kositchek’s and this year the top 12 winners will each be given a choice of calendar page in the Dapper Dads calendar, which will be for sale a few months later. Voting will remain open online until June 8. A real-time tally of the votes can be viewed on the Dapper Dads website – www.sparrow.org/dapperdads, where $25 tickets to the event are also on sale.
