Horizon Conference is Your Opportunity

Speak to almost any successful business woman and she’ll tell you that her success was thanks to a number of opportunities. Of course the presence of opportunities does not ensure success; it’s what one does with those opportunities that matters. When Tiffany Dowling, CAWLM publisher and president of Motion Marketing & Media, was presented with the opportunity to produce one of mid-Michigan’s only professional women’s conferences with Shelley Davis Mielock, owner of Mieshel Image Consulting, she jumped at the chance. “It is so important to live a life filled with lifelong learning,” said Dowling. “We wanted to give that opportunity to women in our community who are working to advance in their careers and move Michigan forward.” The conference, set for Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing, will feature four tracks — entrepreneur, those who want to move up in their career, recent grads and those returning to the workforce. “This is the only conference where women will walk away with tangible information to apply to their careers,” said Mielock. The key note speaker at the event — Marlo Scott — is a woman who knows a lot about opportunity. A University of Michigan grad, Scott enjoyed a successful career in publishing until she was downsized in 2007. She took what some might see as a negative and made is a positive by opening a cupcake, beer and wine bar named Sweet Revenge. “Good things happen out of bad situations,” said Scott. Opened in 2008, Sweet Revenge gained Scott national recognition as an entrepreneur. “(Scott) has an inspirational story of adversity-to-success,” said Dowling. From the success of Sweet Revenge, Scott has been asked to speak at a number of events. “Sometimes these wonderful opportunities arise,” said Scott. “It’s a good way for me to spend my time as opposed to behind the bar.” Other breakout sessions at Horizon include “Re-Entering as a Modern Leader” with Allison McClintick, “Accelerate Life on Your Terms,” with Shann Vander Leek and more. “Any woman can find something at this conference for her, “ said Dowling A special VIP event will take place at the MSU Federal Credit Union Headquarters, 3777 West Road, East Lansing on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
