Q: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MENTOR MICHIGAN COLLEGE COACHING CROPS?
A: At the MMCCC our goal is to improve the education outcomes for the youth of Michigan; especially for those who hope to become first generation college students. With the help of caring adults and investments in local resources an education at the university level is attainable for all. Our job is to get into communities and ensure that these opportunities remain available — regardless of race, income, or family background.
Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET INVOLVED IN SOCIAL WORK?
A: I have always had a passion for making a change in the community, but my ‘aha’ moment came when I was on a volunteer trip after Hurricane Katrina. Working and organizing similar events seemed like a great way to make an impact. After a few internships and completing my masters degree in social work at U of M, here I am today.
Q: WHAT ORGANIZATIONS ARE INVOLVED WITH THE PROGRAM?
A: We are operated by the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), so technically I am an employee of theirs. Our program partners with Mentor Michigan, Michigan Campus Compact, and Americorps as well. They provide expertise in mentoring and help place members across the state in order to help our efforts.
