Thanks to Valentine’s Day, February brings to mind chocolates, roses, dinner out and greeting cards to millions of people. To others it can be a reminder of something missing in their lives. And still others feel that February is just another month on the calendar. As a kid, I remember picking out the Valentine’s Day cards that I would hand out to each member of my class. Every child had to bring in cards for everyone else, and there was usually a class party involved. Nobody was left out or made to feel second-rate. Then life got complicated. Pick me! We all have that desire to have someone care about who we are and what we’re all about. Life can be cruel in that arena when the person you’ve chosen doesn’t reciprocate. I’ve had my share of disappointments and later discovered that it really was for the best. Sometimes the person you need to choose is yourself. How often have you allowed yourself to stay in an unhealthy relationship just because it seemed better than being alone? One of the problems with that is, when the healthy relationship opportunity comes along you’re not ready. Choose to let go if the other person isn’t on board. It doesn’t mean it won’t hurt and leave some scar tissue. Be true Pretending to be something you aren’t is exhausting. You have to keep it up for an indeterminate amount of time. If you can’t be yourself, then what is the point? I want to be with someone who will be okay with my quirks and I can be okay with his. I don’t want pretense and supposition to be part of the equation. I like Law & Order. He doesn’t. He likes True Blood. I don’t and that’s okay. After all, we are still individuals. True love? It’s been six months since I started dating Craig. He’s sweet and funny and very caring about his family and friends. We have several shared interests including reading and music. We also have things not in common with one another. He likes fish and me — not so much. I will say that we are our own persons, willing to share the best and worst with each other and make a go of it. I think my best Valentine has finally arrived.
