Seven thousand people congregated at the Capitol to fight for a cure to breast cancer at the largest 5K series of run/walk events in the world: the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Despite cloudy, drizzly weather, the event had record attendance. The Survivor Oasis Tent was open prior to the race to honor breast cancer survivors. The Oasis offered entertainment, refreshments, door prizes and special treats, and volunteers from Douglas J Salon and Spas provided chair massages and other small pampering treatments. Outside, vendors provided treats and snacks for all along the Capitol lawn walkway and offered educational trinkets and tidbits about preventing breast cancer. The Mid-Michigan Chapter event included seven thousand attendees from Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Jackson, Livingston, Shiawassee and Washtenaw counties. In Michigan, an estimated 6,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in 2008. Of those, 1,310 died. Susan G. Komen is the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. [nggallery id=18]
