The $20 Fashion Challenge

The ladies here at Capital Area Women’s LifeStyle Magazine love a good bargain. On any given day our offices are abuzz with talk of who got what and at what unbelievable price. With that in mind I gave three of our staff members a challenge and $20. Their mission? To find an entire outfit! Here’s what they came up with.

Little Black (Summer) Dress

By Anna Daugherty, The Bugler Attempting to locate an outfit for less than $20 might be difficult for some, but I’m notoriously cheap. The real question was how was I going to come up with something new and that could be worn at the office or out for drinks? Dots has a great selection of plus size clothes in just the price range I needed, so it was easy to find this number. Perfect for evenings on the patio, this little black cotton dress is just the right blend of comfy, cozy and cute. I opted to pile on the sunny yellow accessories to bring some brightness to the look. Dress, $12; sandals, $3; flower, $2 all available at Dots. Earrings, $3 Walmart.

Boho Fab Outfit

By Ami Iceman, Cruise Director My goal was simple: an easy, summer outfit that worked at the beach and out on the town. I started at my go-to discount store Marshalls and weeded through racks of clothes before finding this bright pink bohemian number tucked in the bathing suit section. I took my remaining funds to Forever 21 for accessories and rounded out the look with my gold-and-cream woven sandals and boldly bright nail polish. Dress, $13.99 available at Marshalls; gold hoops by Forever 21, $3.80; gold bangles by Forever 21, $1.80; woven sandals from DSW, butterfly earrings from Forever 21 and China Glaze nail polish from Sally Beauty Supply – all in my closet.

Luxe For Less

Mary McElgunn, Design Chica I’d like to consider myself a bargain shopper, proven by a closet full of discounted designer brands —$1,200 Ralph Lauren pants for $200? What a deal! But finding a $20 outfit that I love? That takes “bargain” to a whole new level. On a mission to find a cheap outfit that looks expensive, I paid close attention to color, fabric and fit. I found this Forever 21 dress at the Goodwill for $4. The cream pashmina and black-and-gold accessories add a little ritz to the look, while the raspberry lipstick is the perfect punch of color. Dress, Forever 21 found at Goodwill, $4; pashmina from Marshalls, $10.99; bracelet, J.C. Penny, clearance $5. Steve Madden heels, Michael Kors belt and lipstick from own closet.
