In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Every artist was first an amateur.”

Those attending the 12thannual Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) Student Art Exhibit kickoff learned that first hand as Dane Porter stepped up to the podium.

Porter recalled his past as an exhibit participant, eagerly attending the events waiting to see if his art would be chosen by the panel of judges. Now Porter has flipped the script and has several large art pieces displayed throughout the Lansing area.

Porter has been commissioned both for residential work as well as commercial pieces that grace the halls and walls of large area businesses including the MSUFCU headquarters. During his address to students, he hinted of a rather large piece that will soon be seen by pedestrians and drivers in East Lansing.

The young artist has been working steadily since he finished his fine arts college education, and the opportunities keep coming. He’s also entered pieces in the Grand Rapids ArtPrize event.

That should be enough to inspire the students with pieces in the annual art exhibit to follow their artistic dreams.

The awards presented at the end of February will include juried awards determined by a panel of judges, a social media award, school spirit award and the people’s choice award.

Art enthusiasts are encouraged to stop by MSUFCU headquarters on West Road in East Lansing to view the art throughout the month of February. They can also visit and vote for art pieces online at msufcuart.com or visit and vote on the MSU Federal Credit Union Student Art Exhibit page on Facebook.
