Homemade Salsa

With the holidays coming up, that also means so are the wonderful treats. Consider serving and enjoying something delicious and good for you at your next holiday get-together. This clean, healthy and yummy salsa is perfect for any event.

What you’ll need:

8 Roma tomatoes

1 white or red onion (whichever you prefer)

1 jalapeno or chile pepper

1 lime (juiced)

2 tbsp. cilantro

Optional: salt, pepper and oregano

Start by pitting the tomatoes and chopping them into small pieces.

Place tomatoes into a large bowl and start dicing your onions to a similar size.

Next, remove stems, ribs and seeds from your pepper. If you can, avoid touching the peppers with your hands. Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water after handling and try to avoid touching eyes for several hours.

Chop the jalapeno into small pieces. (Be careful not to add too much to start; you can always go back and add a little more pepper if not spicy enough.)

Juice the lime and mince cilantro.

Combine all ingredients into a bowl, adding salt and pepper to taste. If adding oregano, crush in your fingers before sprinkling in.

Place all ingredients into a food processor and pulse a few times. Only enough to finely dice the ingredients, not puree them. If you do not have a food processor, finely chop or use a blender (but only for a split second.)

*Hint: If your salsa is too hot, add more chopped tomatoes. If not hot enough, add a few seeds from the peppers. Consider wearing disposable gloves when chopping the pepper.
