From 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, visitors can come to the Central Fire Station in Okemos to learn about what it’s like to be a firefighter and how to prevent a fire in your home.Meridian Township firefighters will provide Jaws of Life extrication demonstrations, EMS simulations, smoke detector and evacuation exercises in the smoke trailer.

The event will also have treats and prizes for participants. Bring your kids for a family-friendly and fun learning experience. Participants are welcome to come sit inside a fire truck, spray a fire hose, and tour the station to learn about fire safety. It is sure to be a fun event that will help you and your family avoid household fires, or know how to react should one occur.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there have been 87 household fire fatalities in Michigan reported by U.S. news media just this year. Some of the main causes of civilian home fires deaths are heating equipment, candles, cooking, and smoking. Don’t let your family be the next victim of household fires. Attending the Fire Prevention Open House could end up saving yours or your loved ones’ lives.

The National Fire Protection Association states that the majority of household fires caused by heating equipment happen in December, January, and February. With these cold months coming up, make sure you are doing everything you can to prevent a fire in your home. The Red Cross suggests the following:

  • Install smoke detectors on all levels of your home, inside and outside of bedrooms.
  • Test your smoke detectors every month, and change the batteries if necessary.
  • Come up with an escape plan for you and/or your family, and practice it twice a year.
  • If a fire starts in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP. Do not go back inside for anything or anyone.
