Help make the dream of a college education come true at the seventh annual Pizza Party on the Capitol Lawn from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9. A $5 donation gets a slice of pizza, pop and ice cream all while helping to send a former foster youth to a Michigan college or university.

Michigan Education Trust Fostering Futures Scholarships are awarded annually to the help make dreams a reality for those with a drive for higher education. Since 2012, the Pizza Party on the Capitol Lawn has raised and awarded as scholarships more than $1 million for Michigan youth.

Members of the Michigan Youth Opportunities Initiative (MYOI) program will also be in attendance at the party. MYOI has partnered with the Michigan Education Trust to collect 300 new standard-size pillows and pillowcases at the event. “The Pillow Effect” will accept new standard pillows and pillowcases for distribution to the youth entering foster care. MYOI believes every child is entitled to a clean and comfortable place to lay their head at night, and a new pillow and pillowcase could help with the transition of youth into a foster home.

MYOI youth will decorate the pillowcases with motivational and empowering sayings like “Be Strong” and “You are Amazing.” The youth in need will each receive a brand-new pillow and pillowcase at the time they enter foster care. Distribution of the pillows includes youth in Berrien, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Montcalm, Jackson, Livingston and Macomb counties.

To ensure there will be enough pizza, pop and ice cream for those in attendance, make sure to reserve a spot today at If interested in helping with The Pillow Effect, bring a new standard-size pillow or pillowcase to the Pizza Party on the Capitol Lawn.
