Sparrow Hospital, a regional trauma center for mid-Michigan, is among statewide leaders in tissue and organ donations – and with the holiday season quickly approaching, the gift of life is probably the biggest gift you can give or receive.
There are just days left in a statewide organ donation challenge, and Sparrow is asking everyone in mid-Michigan to help it add the most names to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
Signing up for the registry is one of the most selfless acts a person can do because it means you’re giving someone else a second chance at life. According to Michigan.gov, just one organ and tissue donor can save the lives of eight people – and enhance the lives of more than 50.
Sparrow has been at high school football games and community events spreading the word in an attempt to top the 241 residents Sparrow was able to sign up as organ donors during last year’s Michigan Gift of Life Hospital Challenge.
“It’s not about the competition, but about lending hope to about 3,200 people in Michigan who are desperately waiting for a transplant,” a Sparrow release said.
If you think you may already be a registered donor but aren’t sure, check your driver’s license for a little red heart symbol that should appear in the lower-right corner.
Sparrow asks that If you’re not among the 65 percent of Michigan adults who are registered organ and tissue donors, visit their website by Nov. 9 to be counted in the challenge.
