The Williamston Theatre opened its doors in 2006 and is known to offer its audience a diverse selection of intimate storytelling experiences. The nonprofit theatre was the recipient of a 2014 National Theatre Company Grant from the American Theatre Wing, and since has received local awards for extraordinary, overall contributions to theatre in the Greater Lansing area.

The professional-equity theatre company has now announced the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of “DoubleWide” by Stephen Spotswood. This was made possible in part by an award from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the Williamston Sunrise Rotary.

“DoubleWide” is touted as a heartfelt and funny exploration of how far one family will go to hold on to their dreams and each other. The cast consists of two newcomers to the Williamston stage: Michigan State University Students Katelyn Hodge and Sean McKeon. Others include Joseph Albright, Brenda Lane and Emily Sutton-Smith. The performance is directed by Williamston Theatre’s Artistic Director Tony Caselli, along with a talented lighting, costume, props and scenic design crew.

The premise revolves around the character Jim Starkey, whose version of the American Dream is a modest one.  Starkey wants to build a home on his one-acre plot of land and replace his doublewide trailer with something he and his wife Sharon can leave as an inheritance for their daughter, Lorelai.  When a highway expansion project shatters their plans, the family has differing ideas on how to keep their dreams alive. Meanwhile, Lorelai has to think about what kind of future to build for herself.

Tickets are on sale now, and performances run from March 22 to April 22. For information, visit williamstontheatre.org.
